FRIARS KICK OFF THE SEASON WITH A WIN

The Father Duenas Friars started out their quest for the 2015 Interscholastic Football League championship by shutting down the John F. Kennedy Islanders to win the season opener 14-6 at George Washington High School field on Saturday.

Sudo got the scoring started with a 54-yard touchdown late in the first quarter, but it was the Friars’ defense and run game that carried the day. FD rushed the ball on seven of its first eight plays, opening the passing game for sophomore quarterback Daniel Phillips.

FD moved the ball down field with their runs but JFK stepped up, forcing a field goal attempt that flew wide on the Friars’ first drive. The Islanders took longer to find ground offensively, getting stopped for one-yard gains and committing several costly penalties. FD worked Shimizu and junior fullback Christian Toves on the ground again, moving the ball down field and collapsing JFK’s defense even further.

Phillips spotted him, still covered, and launched a pass from the far hash down the left sideline. Sudo broke away from his coverage and ran under the ball, coasting the remaining 30 yards into the end zone as the first quarter ran down.

FD put together two more long drives in the first half, getting stalled and missing another field goal attempt on one and scoring on the other. Sophomore running back De’Aundre Cruz fumbled from the 3 but his teammate, junior tight end John “Thomas” Fegurgur, dove on it in the end zone.
