With far fewer players and after losing two quarterbacks, the Guam High School Panthers were no match for the Father Duenas Memorial School Friars, who shut out the Panthers 30-0 in football Saturday morning.
It was a game riddled with penalties and fumbles played in a steady downpour that never let up.
FD's bruising running back, De'Aundre Cruz, ran for three touchdowns and had a dozen other runs for positive gains as he ran rampant into the Panther secondary.
Friar quarterback Daniel Phillips kept it mostly on the mushy ground but did have a couple of strikes to Xavier Naputi, including a 21-yard toss into the end zone for FD.
Giancarlo Abril nailed a 36-yard field goal late in the the fourth quarter to add to his 3 PATs, giving the Friars the final margin of the game.
After losing first- and second-string quarterbacks, Guam High School entered the match at a disadvantage, according to head coach Jacob Dowell.
"I feel proud of my kids because we lost our first string quarterback during the first game, and this morning right before the game started, we lost our other quarterback. So we were down to our third string quarterback before the game even started," Dowell said.
"We already didn't have enough guys — they got 60 and we have 20, but hats off to (Friars Head Coach) Bruce (Meno) and his guys," Dowell said.
"I'm also proud of my guys in the way they fought. De'Aundre Cruz is a great back, and Bruce and those guys brought it, but 70-80 percent of our team are freshmen. They have some seniors. Hats off to them for allowing us to have some fun out here in typhoon weather."
De'Aundre said Friars played well in the wet weather.
"Our coaches trained us and make it hard for us so we can get used to handling this kind of weather and it's been raining all week," he said.
"Heart and determination were key to our victory today," he said.
