The John F. Kennedy Islanders came back from an early four-run deficit to beat the host Father Duenas Friars and advance to the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam Baseball League championship with a 9-7 win on Tuesday.
Senior Nolan Chamberlain came on in relief for the Islanders to pick up the win. Second baseman Cole Palomo had two hits, centerfielder Benen Iguel had a double and two runs, and Devin Duenas scored two runs.
The game was called after six complete innings.
The Friars jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, a rally that began with a Nic Charfauros single. He scored the game’s first run on a hit by Austin Peredo.
JFK took the lead with six runs in the fourth. Freddy Degracia led off with a walk and the first six batters came around to score.
FD tied the game in the bottom of the inning, but the Islanders added three runs in the sixth. Duenas scored the go-ahead run when Tomas Sablan walked with the bases loaded.
The Friars got one run back in the sixth but the long, high-scoring inning ate away the light before the second-ever game at FD’s home field reached a full seven innings.
JFK had added four more runs in the top of the seventh inning, a frame that was erased because FD didn’t have a chance to finish its half inning. The Friars had two outs and none on when the game was called.
