The Navy Junior ROTC cadets from Father Dueñas Memorial School joined various groups and school organizations from around the island in the 31st International Coastal Clean-up on an early cloudy Saturday morning on September 17, 2016.
The coastal cleanup is an annual event worldwide started by the environmental group called Ocean Conservancy. Its main objective was to help clean the world’s coastlines. The Phoenix Company cadets have been contributing to the cause for a cleaner ocean and environment for the past twelve-plus years.
The cadets led by their Commanding Officer, Cadet Commander Dominic Salenga, were clad in their Navy bright yellow physical fitness training shirts and blue shorts, and started the day like all other volunteer, by signing up with the coordinators and receiving their trash bags, gloves, and tally card. After being put into groups, cadets soon boarded a bus going to the former Ace Hardware Store, which was their starting point. The cadets then walked their way back north to Paseo Stadium picking up trash along both the Marine Corps Drive and the island's coastline.
In the end, the 44 cadets along with their 2 Naval Science Instructors, like the other volunteers were able to contribute to the cause to clean up the island’s coast. This clean up project is just one of the several community service projects that Phoenix Company Cadets are involved with throughout the school year.
