The defending champion Father Duenas Memorial School Friars romped past the John F. Kennedy High School Islanders 28-0 Saturday at JFK football field in the 2017 Interscholastic Football League.
The Friars' Xavier Naputi scored the first touchdown on a kick return. Giancarlo Abril kicked the conversion for the Friars. making it 7-0.
"It was an OK game and we had a lot of mistakes and we just have to fix that. Good game to the Islanders; they played hard," said Naputi.
Kein Artero added two touchdowns for the Friars in the first half.
"We're going to keep working hard to improve and minimize on our mistakes and hopefully come out with a win again," said Artero.
Despite not scoring, the Islanders fought hard against the Friars and only allowed one touchdown in the second half.
"My team never gave up and it shows a lot of potential. We have a lot of new players to football, so despite the score, our boys worked hard," said JFK head coach Allen Blend. "I think the rest of the season is going to be a positive outcome for a lot of these kids. We've now played the defending champs and have a lot of work to do. No excuses; we just beat ourselves today."
